Virginia Beach residents are fuming at visitors who left piles of trash on the shore during the Memorial Day holiday weekend.

Citizens and a public work crew volunteered to Chic's Beach area of Virginia Beach on Monday to clean up the mess left after the annual 'Floatopia' party.

Floatopia is an annual event that invites thousands of visitors who take to the waters in boats and floats to celebrate Memorial Day.

Up to ten tons of garbage was removed from the shore after the party.

A Virginia Beach resident, describing the event, said:

"It was an absolute madhouse, the beach, you couldn't even hardly tell where the beach ended, there were so many people."

According to Virginia Beach Public Works spokesperson, Drew Lankford, a crew of nine people arrived on Monday morning, removing up to ten tons of garbage by around 9:15 am.

The garbage collected is 10 times more than the usual trash removed in the area after a typical weekend. Lankford told WCNC-TV:

"It was food wrappers, cans, bottles, pieces of floats, towels, everything. It was almost like they saw a tornado coming and everybody just got up and ran for safety and left everything there."

Virginia Beach residents and officials have shared their disappointment over the mess the traditional event left at the shore.

City councilman Michael, F. Berlucchi, wrote on Twitter:

"I was disappointed to wake up this morning to see images of trash all over our beautiful Chesapeake Bay beach after Sunday's festivities. We can do better than this! Let's work together to keep our City beautiful."

Linda Berardi, a Virginia Beach resident, wrote on Facebook:

"Each one of you is a piece of trash- you left a piece of your ignorant $@@ on the beach. You are NOT welcome. Go back to your trash heap neighborhoods and don't come back again!"

Mari Kelley added:

"This is disgusting!"

"How can people be so disrespectful of mother earth, our water, our land, and our fellow humanity? People have to stop this abuse."

Philip Taylor wrote:

"I saw what your event left behind this year... I hope no one ever gives you permission again."

One resident, joking, suggested that next year's event should be moved to the Virginia Beach landfill.

The resident wrote:

"There's a pond behind the landfill you all can float in. You should feel more at home there."
